Where: Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
When: 4 Mar - 8 Mar 2017
If you're looking for an alternative to the massive Rio de Janeiro Carnival, head down the coast to the old colonial town of Parati. The more traditional party here is less crowded and set in a utopian environment.
Parati's celebrations includes masked blocos, or carnival groups, along with children and adults in fancy dress and effigies of famous personalities. Carnival costume is often harmlessly scary with skulls and deformed papier machê heads.
Most of the celebrations take place in Parati's historic district, but there are also plenty of other events on the local beaches.
